In the Irish Channel, OFFICE La reworked an 1800s side-gallery shotgun with a camelback, starting with its relationship to the climate. Seven sets of French doors, lost over the years, were restored along the side gallery so the house opens fully to the porch once again. Inside, a reorganized stair turned an enfilade room into a proper bedroom, and the camelback became a primary suite that flows from bedroom to closet to bath. Every new element is unmistakably new: clean-lined white oak or painted, set against high ceilings, brick fireplaces, and the original wood floors.
